Back in August of 2019 I decided to switch from MailerLite to Flodesk to see what all the hype was about. I was fairly familiar with email marketing, and the beautifully, sleek interface of Flodesk definitely drew me in.
There were several different reasons I decided to switch from the free MailerLite to Flodesk, even though it’s paid. And I can promise you, if I’d been using Mailchimp I would have switched from Mailchimp to Flodesk even faster.
You see, I’m a big fan of email marketing, but I’m also a frugal entrepreneur (thanks, Profit First). So why did I decide to switch from a free platform that seemingly had everything I needed to Flodesk?

In this post I’ll share why I decided to switch from MailerLite to Flodesk and why I think you should too.

So are you ready to hear more about why I decided to make the switch? Let’s do this!
Aesthetics
As a web and brand designer, aesthetics are important to me. Who am I to be preaching about brand recognition and brand consistency if I can’t even do that across my own brand and platforms?
After coming across my post about Setting up Flodesk and Squarespace, one of my readers sent me a DM on Instagram asking if I would recommend that she sign up for Flodesk over one of the free platforms out there.
In an effort to provide you all with full transparency, here’s what I told her:
If your audience is one that cares about aesthetics and you’re ready to invest in an email marketing platform, Flodesk is 100% the way to go.
Why did I not say “YESSS, of course you need Flodesk”?
Because it’s not my place to decide how you spend your money. And honestly, at the time I was still debating whether or not I wanted to invest myself.
I loved my free trial with Flodesk, but I was still trying to decide if it was worth it to invest in a paid platform when the free one I had been using was doing just fine.
For me, it came down to the fact that I was rebranding my own business, and I was honestly excited about all the opportunities Flodesk was able to provide me in building that brand recognition across platforms.
Open Rates
If you’ve been around Hygge Design Co for a minute, you might know that I love pretty things, but that I’m also a firm believer that pretty doesn’t matter if it doesn’t get the job done.
After switching from MailerLite to Flodesk, I noticed that my email list was growing rapidly, and my open rates actually did the same as well.
I was expecting my open rates to go down as my list grew – after all, more people would have to open my emails to reach the same percentage (duhh, basic math).
With a small list on MailerLite my open rates were about 30% with click rates anywhere from 1% to 10%. With Flodesk, I’ve been seeing open rates over 30%, and as high as 40%, with a list that has become twice as big!
Now that is what I call a win.
GDPR Compliance
While both Flodesk and MailerLite are GDPR compliant, their interpretation of the rules are a little different.
I have been super impressed with the way Flodesk has set up their signup forms. With MailerLite, I had double opt-in set up, which significantly lowered my actual subscriber count and made list growing a painfully slow process (yes, you can actually see the people who signed up but didn’t complete the second opt-in).
With Flodesk on the other hand, there’s no need for double opt-in, so growing my list has become a breeze.
Since my business name (and myself for that matter) are European, I know I get some European visitors, so I wanted to make sure that I am compliant with the rules. Flodesk has some great resources on how you can be GDPR compliant that you can check out here.
I actually want to send emails
Now this is where my decision to switch from MailerLite to Flodesk actually happened. I noticed that the higher open rates, the rapidly growing list, and the overall ease of setting up my brand in Flodesk made me want to send out emails.
A cold email list will certainly do no good for your business, but with Flodesk I felt motivated to share what was going on in my business, and I almost felt like the people on the other side cared. Like they were people, and not just names on a list.
After sending emails with Flodesk I have actually received responses back from my subscribers, which never happened before, and it has honestly been so motivating to see this change!
So while Flodesk is a paid service, I noticed that I was sending more emails because I was motivated (and maybe felt a little guilty if I didn’t use it – like that support gym membership), and that has made my list even better!
